3D Warehouse

Seems like a do-able workaround.

I can live with this...never spent much time over there and it's about time considering this post from Hermes:
Tom.

whimpers wow...

I would rather work together in a concerted effort with other pros to build a component database of great units... I would rather keep them here, and build a download with all of the "approved" components...
I would also like direction, where as a group we did kitchens one week the next week someother grouping, where we all brought submissions.....

Like a new "3D Challenge" - but in a more "serious" way?
It sounds a good idea though... -

FFTGreat Idea!

agreed - wonderful suggestion - we all love modelling, but often it is not for fun where we can take our own direction. That is what I liked with the 3D challenge during the first 2 weeks. The model challenge was a stereo and a chess set. For the chess set, I made a mayan obsidian one and learned all about intersect (lots of them!) for the stereo, I made an old transformer robot/boombox - that was fun too. I didn't keep up because it was in a different place and became pretty low quality I thought...
I think this idea could help brush up on some skills as well as get some design ideas from each other. Some of you guys have some wild ideas about what certain form/functions should be, or what can fit into a specific category.
Great idea man.

Splendid idea...less a competition, more a vision sharing!
-
excellent... I'll host anything if needed... I can make an open FTP server for us to dump in and then we'll review them for final changes...
this will be awesome... I can't wait to see Column week or Balustrade week...
I know this is stretching but it could even break into teams... or threads for each group of components

that's why I'm wanting to do this... I want to have the people without 170 bucks to blow... to have the tools to create professional models and renderings in a shorter amount of time.

not a subscriber either.

I think that I've had the same idea as Coen. FF's bandwidth and storage capacity is limitless....we run our own servers. I'll ask around and see if it's technically possible to set up a resource (not the FF Exchange) that is entirely outside the FormFonts firewall and open to everyone, regardless of subscription.
I'm making no promises, but if it is possible, it might be fairly easy to copy the whole Exchange GUI into a new, free area that specifically services this forum. This means that not only would you be able to find stuff via links on these pages, but you could directly search the site as an independent resource....like the old Objective Networks. I'm sure those of you that are subscribers know how much easier it is to find stuff on FF than on the Warehouse.
Myself and others here might be able to keep an eye on the place and delete any junk that appears. I guess we could either make it completely open, or you'd have to log in using the same User/Pass that you have here...which would limit it to SketchUcation members only.Given FormFonts' secret plans for the future, it might even be possible to host stuff like video and audio. You would probably be able to organise collections too, as you can at present.
As I say, I can't promise anything, because I'm not sure of the technical difficulties, but I'll make a few enquiries.

awesome...

Good idea to have the login the same as here on SketchUcation, methinks.
-
Yes, it does have a nice exclusive, cosy feel to it, doesn't it? My thoughts were that it would leave the resource less open to abuse (as in this thread) and prevent all the good stuff being buried under a torrent of garbage.

I' all ears (way to go Alan!).

The 3D Warehouse already has a very good way to organize models. You can create collections of models, and then create collections of collections making a logical and easy-to-navigate hierarchy.
Maybe a SketchUcation account could be created and the password given to moderators, who would then control the contents of the submissions.
Here is an example of what the hierarchy might look like: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/cldetails?mid=3d206db5e11ff8c3c82ffa9bf7bce40b
You can include other people collections in any collection also, so maybe each individual is responsible for their own collection, and a moderator could add that persons collectiob to the SketchUcation collection.
