Idea to get variegated colors
-
In making up a slate roof we wanted to use components to actually model the shingles. Of course as components, they all look the same. In this experiment I created a png texture with blotches of color to suggest various stone colors and patina, and painted a face laid just above the shingles. I think it worked out great. I could have made the texture larger since the resolution is not that important. Next I'd vary the shingle layout and work on the ridge. But really trying not to spend a lot of time fussing with it. Each course is a component and each side of the roof is an instance of the one-half roof component.
The overlying texture is mostly transparent with blotches of color using a airbrush tool in GIMP. It should be set to not receive or cast shadows and the edges are hidden. Holding it back from the edges of the roof because it can cause a ghost image against the sky.
Too bad floor generator is gone. I suppose that could have been used to get a similar effect.
