      Danish Side Table.png

Based on a table from Denmark c. 1960. The original is stained black and then finished with a clear varnish. I was thinking that the Japanese method of Shou Sugi Ban would work nicely for this.

        That is very cool.

How does the joinery work in the corners? It's a bit tough to figure out because of the dark colour.

It is a little difficult, isn't it?

          How's this?

            Dave,
You made me look up shou sugi ban, the finishing technique that involves charring the wood and then coating it with a clear finish. The Maine furniture maker Kevin Rodel http://www.kevinrodel.com has done some interesting pieces using the technique, I believe. He's managed to merge Arts & Crafts designs with Japanese styles.
            Best,
            dh

              Hi David,

I didn't know that Kevin has used that method for finishing. Thank you for sharing the link. He does some nice stuff, doesn't he?

                  Dave,
Yes, Kevin Rodel does good work (although some of his pieces are a bit odd).

                      Without adhesive there's no way.

Thanks for the monochrome images of the joinery. Very nice detail. Would be fun to build.
