Civil War-Era Canteen

This was a quickie I doodled out for a guy who was looking for plans to make a replica of a canteen from the time of the American Civil War. Actually it's a pretty basic model. Only a little Follow Me action. Trim and Keep was handy for drilling the hole for the spigot and cutting reliefs for the strap retainers.

No cut list yet. I'm waiting for more accurate dimensions from the guy I drew it for. I found a couple of photos that I used for reference which had a cloth tape draped loosely over the canteen to give size reference but I didn't get exact sizes. It might not matter much, though.

So this is why tin canteens were later made in the circular design. Or perhaps the barrel approach suited tin design as well. I had one in scouts that was round though far removed from this sort of construction.

You're probably right about the early tin canteens. Bend a hoop and solder on two slightly domed or bulls-eye-corrugated disks and Bob's yer uncle. I expect with machines to press out domes of aluminum, it made good sense to switch to canteens with only one seam. Fewer parts, less chance of a leak and stronger.
