How can I apply a texture in all components of a layer?

I wanna show pipes, electric installations, etc inside the walls.
Is there any way I can do that (without hiding the layer "walls")?

X-Ray mode? Or create a unique material that you apply only to walls, then turn its opacity down just far enough to show the piping and ducting within.
