Replicate a 3D object along a path

I'm looking for a plugin to replicate a 3D object along a path. I have a molding profile that I create along a shelf edge (or anything, for that matter). The molding accepts decorative, patterned inserts - a link astragal, for instance, that I need to replicate. The pattern repeats over a given distance, say every 6-8 inches, and the pattern is 3D.
Is anyone aware of a plugin that will accomplish what I'm looking for?
