Stone Henge
-
I was watching a recent program on Stonehenge and I wondered, why haven't the modern Brits rebuilt it, like the Greeks are doing with the Parthenon? I asked this on the old @Last SUp forum but forget what the answer was. Who's in charge of the site anyway, maybe I could email them and ask?
Aren't all the megaliths still there on site? If not, who removed them?

An alone men is rebuilding it!

It is looked after by English Heritage

Conservationists in the UK tend to frown on re-building ancient monuments. It's just not done, old chap!

Actually, we do re-build buildings if they are about to fall down
It usually costs oodles of cash as everything has to be as authentic (of the period) as possible. Igtham Mote was actually saved from demolition by an American.

I'm not saying it should be, but would be quite a sight.
has this ever been discussed over there, in the press or even the English Heritage?
are the megaliths and cap stones still there? I know most all the bluestones are vanished.

Rebuild it? To what end? I would imagine the stones have eroded over time, and some may have broken. Also, I know they've found some post holes, suggesting wooden poles. Did it incorporate a wooden structure? With a roof? I know recent archaeology has unearthed some new information, but I believe there are still more questions. Any reconstruction would be at best an educated conjecture.

Oh at least the main big uprights and the lintels, what a sight that would be,
that is, if all the pieces are still there on site.
I emailed E heritage with my question, I'll let everyone know if they reply.
