Log me in automatically

This is not working for me. I wonder what it can be? I have the browser set to accept cookies.

are you using private browsing by any chance?
(i think you use firefox? but on safari, i know that can cause auto login problems)

Also, in order for a site to log you in automatically, you do not only need to allow cookies (for that session) but also to allow to keep those cookies after you close the browser.
Many browsers can delete cookies when you close the browser so you need to make exceptions for certain sites. Also (for example) in CCleaner (as it is a popular, free cleaning utility), there is a setting where you can tell the program which cookies to keep when cleaning up.
Allowing cookies for a given session only will just let you keep logged in when browsing the forums during that session (without that, after logging in and clicking on the next link to go to another page, it will automatically kick you out). Keeping these cookies for after the session and browser close and reopen lets you auto-log in again.
Now of course, there may be other issues, too but this would be the first I'd check.

Hmmm. it may be third party cookies or it may be the keep-until settings. I noticed I got kicked off even when I had not closed FF. So it knows if I am going to erase on closing--and doesn't like that? So I have it set to accept everything and keep it forever... seems to work.
Thanks, Peter

"Log me in automatically" (aka "Remember me") is set in the cookie. So if you choose to delete all cookies when closing the browser session (I would no blame you - knowing that Facebook cookies keep tracking your web "experience" even after logging out), you delete this "info" as well.
In most browsers there is a possibility to set what cookies NOT to delete. It's your interest - and responsibility - which sites to trust or not to trust (to keep them).
