Some Shaker Stuff

All,
Just finished modeling a couple of Shaker pieces, taken from articles in old issues of Fine Woodworking magazine.
The nice thing about Shaker (aside from its amazingly good looks) is its simplicity. Each model took no time at all. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Nice work, David. I didn't realize that sort of sleigh bed would be in the Shaker style.

Of course I had to have a poke at your models. I found two things with quick looks.

On the little sewing stand the knobs are inside the drawer front component. They should be outside the drawer front component.

The bottom mattress/box spring is inside out.

The sleigh bed is a deliberately simplified design that Chris Becksvoort (a master of the Shaker style) made for a client. In the Fine Woodworking article, he explains that it took him only 96 hours to build; if he had tried to do coopered panels on the headboard and footboard, it would have taken 10 times longer.

I knew I could count on you to check out the models. Thanks, as always. The knobs are part of the drawer component so that they move with the rest of the drawer if I ever want to show someone how that works. I'll have to speak to the maid about that box spring. It's so hard to find good help these days.

Maybe you're not tipping the maid enough.

I'd have chosen those panels over coopered ends, too.

As to the knobs, move them from inside the drawer front component and out into the drawer assembly component. They'll still move with the drawer but then the drawer front will be its own component and show up correctly in a cut list.

How did you manage with Sandy?

Nice work. I love Chris Becksvoorts stuff. Simple but beautifully made and an excellent authority on the Shaker Style. Thanks for sharing.

I've done SketchUp models and full construction plans for about half a dozen of Chris Becksvoort's pieces. He definitely has a way with the Shaker style.
