Method for realistic towel and bathrobe, any ideas?

Hi Mike,
It all depends on the render engine. If you want the "real" thing you'll have to use displacement. ( Indigo, Thea , Maxwell, Fryrender, Cinema 4D . if using a render app that doesn't have displacement options, I would go with normals in kerkythea combined with a bump.
in the att. render I used a displacement map made with pixplant 2. Render made with Indigo. I was pretty pleased with the result on the towel. Nevermind the scenery and the design. Not my best work

In Kerkythea you could try instancing brush, but I think displacement is better for a towel. Normal or bump map will work, if you don't go too close.

I've made a bumpmap and applied it.
then I've got that result with twilightrender. Looks quite OK, I think...

I'd be interested in this too, what would an experienced sketchup user do/what would a good approach be if he wanted to model a detailed bathrobe that was hanging from a hook?
