You might try one of the other rendering engines. Most of them work with SketchUp Free.
The "secret" is for the person who writes the interface to SketchUp to create a "ruby exporter" or a 'SKP file reader" for the renderer (which work with SketchUp free), rather than to use a "3D exporter" which only works with SketchUp Pro.

hi mike, artlantis (i use 2.1.0.4) can open skp files directly. you don't have to have an exporter for artlantis to use with SU free.
