Zsolnay

Zsolnay is a porcellain factory in my town. It was founded in 1856 (if I remember correctly) and by the end of the 19th century it became one of the biggest in Middle-Europe. Not only fine tableware but also building ceramics were (and still are) made here and interestingly, a lot of parts of the factory (even the chimneys) are even decorated with them. It is currently the biggest industrial monument in Middle-Europe.
It is a whole quarter in town now and is getting a complete overhaul: old parts are being renovated, new buildings are being added and it will be turned into a sort of cultural quarter with the Faculty of Arts located here, different concert halls, theatres, exhibition areas, small craft shops etc. (beside the factory still working in some parts of it).
Here is the link of a whole bunch of pictures.
Just a personal note: I used to live right next to it (in fact, the old, ugly, grey building can even be seen over the wall in one of the photos) and went to kindergarten in the factory. I really loved it. It was like a wonder world for me back then - and I really love to see it being renovated and new functions given.
It would be a nice challenge to build the whole thing in 3D after it is done - especially that we have all the data of how it evolved, about old buildings/parts not existing any more etc.

Now, it may be far OT, but I remember reading somewhere that you intend to model your whole city for Google Earth by 2010 (when it became the European Capital of Culture). I really don´t know how far did you get with your work, but the mere idea is worth saluting.
Not to mention the effort you put in such reconstructions.I have to admit, I used to have similar plans with my home town, until I realized it´s far beyond the realm of my abilities. But I´m still planning to reconstruct Diocletian´s Palace in 3D. It may be less severe delusion.
Now, where is that hilly street you used to race down?

Thank you Gai for posting. All this must be great for your local economy and morale.

Well, I started with the footprints and also extruded a couple of hundred buildings to the correct height. There was supposed to be some funding for it (you cannot imagine such a task based on enthusiasm solely) but then the township was only just talking about it. Maybe some other ways of financing it...

Indeed. That building at the end is the mausoleum of the founder, Vilmos (William) Zsolnay (died in 1908 as far as I remember). Magnificent structure actually.
Here is a GE placemark of the factory and the mausoleum
