Collada round tripping
-
I started the evening thinking I was going to start working on a Collada exporter for my app.
As things turn out it appears that while the Sketchup Collada exporter exports the geometry complete with group hierarchy the Sketchup importer explodes everything inside the super-group on import - which kinda makes it pretty useless. If Google is expecting us to consider Collada as a serious alternative to DWG/DXF they need to get their act together.

From what I read, it's not really Google's fault, but Autodesk's- something to do with the development kit from Autodesk being rather out of date. I did have a link illustrating this, but I'm afraid its gone. Sorry.

As Collada is XML there is no reason why they should not be able to parse block and group hierarchies on import.
As said Sketchup exports the hierarchies OK but cant do a 'round trip' and import the geometry in the same state.I think your comment refers to the Autodesk kit for DWG/DXF. I'm under the impression Sketchup uses libraries provided by the Open Design Alliance.
