Tag 3d Models in GE

Hi everybody I have a problem, and I really hope you guys can help me in a few days I will have a meeting with the state council of hotels (I live in Mexico specifically in Villahermosa Tabasco) the main purpouse of the meeting is to invite all kind of hotels and resorts to appear in the 3D layer of GE, I have uploaded a few models, that at this moment are included in 3D layer my intention is to model their buildings, however I want to add a plus to my work and deliver not only a 3D model but also an informative tag/ballon about the resort or the specified building, I noticed that some Hotels around the world have these tags wich I don't know how to activate like the sample below. I did some research and discovered the Spreadsheet Mapper tool wich allows you to create ballons with info but soon I discovered that those ballons doesn't display in GE permanently only in your PC in a KML file.(or maybe I'm missing something :S)

My question and concern is how do I make permanent tags like the picture above with the icons displayed like restaurant and hotel, do I have to pay for it?. Is there any tutorial on how to make those tags? I want them permanently no in a KML file embeded on a website.

Hi Alejandro,

There are a couple of ways you can "tweak" things. Those labels you see there are of course not submitted via the 3D WareHouse (or anything 3D related) but via the Google Earth Community at bbs.keyhole.com (the "original" GE forum before Google acquired what is now GE) OR via Google Map Maker (IF Mexico is in the programme - interesting that my country is not so there's no way I could use it) as the info/data is transferable between maps and earth. You can even simply add these things in your Google Maps application and once they will be included.

Some basic knowledge of html coding (or at least copy/pasting existing code) is not bad when editing these "bubbles" as they can have pretty rich content (unfortunately this is not the case with the GE 3D Layer bubbles - I have an old feature request at google to allow us code those bubbles)

Also, you can add a link to the description of your 3D model and that could take the visitor to a website where you can create individual pages for these hotels displaying images, interactive content, different links whatnot. If you are going to meet with these guys, you could even "offer" his as an "extra service" IMO. It is not that damn difficult to create something like this with the help of any easy to use content management systems.

Hey Gaieus,

I would love to be able to add content and/or links to more information to each model in our Carnegie Library collection. I would like to be able to show off of the model in GE, more accurate renders of exterior and interior shots of each Carnegie, and schematic floor plans and elevations.

It's what we are trying to put together in making our project a more accurate historic record of the Carnegie collection.

Is there a step by step instruction method for being able to add that kind of content to GE models?

I see it developing in this simple manner.

GE models residing in GE are like icons on a web page, linking to more interactive and rich information about each location.

Can you help me pull this off, or send me to someone who can instruct us on how we could accomplish this?

Hi Jax,

You can easily do this

Create a "Folder" in GE (that will work as a "Placemark" and can be saved as kmz)
Place your exported model inside this folder
Right click your folder in your sidebar and add any kind of rich html in the description field (you can even embed Picasa slideshows or YouTube videos, colour the background and whatnot)
Then you can upload the saved kmz file via the Warehouse web interface (not from SU itself) and you can tell them to go to download the file from the WH to see the rich content
However (and my pain) there are two issues with this

When the model is accepted in the 3D Layer, this info will not be shown at all but will be replaced by that flat description field you add when uploading the model.
You cannot click on a downloaded model in GE so even if one downloads the original you uploaded, (s)he will need to click on the downloaded file name in the sidebar to get the bubble.
Here is an example I made:

Download the model (it will be superimposed on the one currently in the Warehouse so uncheck its visibility first in the sidebar).
Click on the one on the official 3D Layer and see how it is formatted.
Now right click on this one and "Hide model" and check the visibility of the one downloaded from the Warehouse to see how differently the text is formatted (not too difficult but there is bold, an image embedded and there is an unordered list)
Finally another problem with this method (for us at least) that while the model from the 3D Layer is loaded with your preferred language (if there is a translation of course), this one can only contain one language (or you can make it bilingual if you want). However, if we had the possibility to add rich html in the warehouse, this would not be a problem.

OK! I downloaded the model example, and then I right clicked on the 3D layer model to hide it, and then clicked on the visibility for the model I downloaded from the warehouse, but I could not see any information attached to that model.

I can right click on the properties of the downloaded model to see the HTML code, but how do I get that information to come up so I can see it off of the model?

OH1 I just clicked on the Name of the model in the left column to see the information, but it's not attached to the viewable model in GE. Will it be eventually?

I have another question though, Uploading the saved KMZ file I created in GE. Could you explain how that is done to connect it to the model in the 3D warehouse?

I found out if you go to the 3d warehouse home page, there is an upload button up in the top right hand corner. I believe that is what he is talking about.

Interesting.. I never noticed that button , I'm also using Google Map Maker to submit what I'm looking for however my submition status is in "pending" I guess because I'm new at map maker, let's wait and see
