Bloom is it just a SCF thing?
-
I've started to wonder looking through many gallery images if introducing bloom (the haze from highlights in renders) is limited to images posted on the Sketchucation forums?
I look through quite a number of archvis forums and yet unless it's sometimes rendered with Vray most such images lack such bloom effects, yet it almost seems a common if not overused practice here!
Just wondering if others are noting this?
My monitor setting don't change from site to site and sure my eyes get bit strained by the afternoon or evening but even if i look with fresh eyes in the morning these same renders seem to need a good hit on the sharpen button!

You better keep a quick "SCF setting" in your monitor.
I guess it's because some people here use Intel Bloomfield processors. I must clarify that I don't.Wait until people start rendering seizure-inducing blooms.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to show what the Bloom effect is all about for in-experienced users...?!
Here's one of the better known Bloom Effect tutorials...Here's an excellent example, where the bloom effect has - IMO - been used as it should...

Here I don't agree with you... The Bloom effect is widely used in many renders...! However I assume that many don't post information about what post pro they've done to their renders...

I fully agree with you that Bloom should be subtle and that some users overuse it...

I think some people use a lot of bloom to 'save' the render.
Some render engines for Sketchup lack color bleeding. Bloom often is added in post to fake some color bleeding and save the day... -
I tend to see it a lot with 3ds ArchViz renders for some reason as well. I don't typically mind it too much personally. It can be annoying when you see it so often, but the people who matter (clients) don't look at 30+ rendered images a day like some of us do. I think it's an easy way to give an image a bit of flair and emotion. I personally don't typically use the effect because it tends to give the image a more stylized feel rather than photorealistic which is my aim. It also tends to wash out the details which is great for some people but if you spent a lot of time on those details...

Mate, please also remember that some use i.e. Neat Image to reduce noise/grainy look in renders generated with unbiased render engines...
Some renders look a little blurry/bloom'ed after the noise reduction... -
HDR to LDR work flow can create a bloom like effect.

Richard, I do not use it often and I do agree it can be over used. The times I've used it was when I was rendering with an unbiased engine and either got impatient and stopped it prematurely and used the bloom effect to lessen the noise, or because I was going for a certain soft look.
I posted a WIP on the twilight forum and had a laugh at your expense because I used the bloom effect as I was impatient and it was a test render and not my final.
So here is the 'soft focus' render mate...enjoynb* I do not add any effects for commercial renders.

Mate glad to hear you don't normally use such effects!
I know exactly what you mean about noisy renders being a Maxwell user (bring on V2!), to denoise I normally use the denoise PS filter and then sharpen. Seems to do a fairly good job! Mate your plants are always great! Did I say bastard?
