Problems with painting

I have a question that i would like to have answered. When I try to paint my roofing it paints every thing under my roof insted of painting my roof. so I was wondering if anybody knows how to fix this problem. by the way I'm using sketchup 7 if that helps.

Is everything 'under' your roof grouped together? You might think you're applying a material to a roof surface or group when you're really painting another group. Perhaps you could 'hide' everything apart from the roof via layers or the layout window and then try painting the roof?

The same thing came to my mind; isn't your model grouped by any chance? If so, just "enter" the group (double click) until you get to the individual faces and only paint those.
Or attach a model (paste a link to where it1s uploaded) for us to see what1s going on.
