Introducing Google Chrome OS...

Interesting. I wonder how far the OS will go? Is it going to be a platform simply for the basics like word processing, email and various other simple apps (Google Docs, Gmail, etc...) or will it slowly morph into something where software companies will be writing the next game, 3D Studio Max or whatever for? Reading that article, it seems that it'd be a great OS for a Net Book where you just want to browse and do some really basic work with it, but that's where it stops.
With it being a Linux based OS, maybe this will finally get Linux pushed to the front as a more stable and more user-friendly OS.

Anything new, compared to windows has many possibilities to be a better product. For me Google is more Apple-like in its software methods so it is welcome.
The only reason I find for one system to survive or not is the public knowledge and acceptation, I don't write drivers for any condemned platform. For us, the mac users, is a fact that any company who wants to get a great business will do it with our community if they do things right, if not there is a smaller portion of the PC world but for how much time? -
Very interesting. This could have been expected for a while though and yes, the big question is; will other apps be running or is this going to remain a toy for those only browsing the net and writing emails.
Also, as it seems to be Linux based, will it mean that SU will finally (and fully) support Linux?

Im looking forward to it already! If it achieves all their goals it certainly sounds like it could provide a very good alternative to windows.

I think one interesting question for us to discuss is:
Will there be a version of Sketchup on Chrome?Because that would mean we had a real Sketchup for linux. Yes Sketchup works/ is supposed to work (sometimes) on linux in wine...
but not yet for meI worry that they won't do it. Google Chrome OS and Chrome browser a made for web applications. Therefore the browser can run web applications without displaying the menus etc, for example Google docs looks like a Microsoft Word window.

I've only just seen this thread. I see the possibility of running SU, a mainstream 3d program on Linux as potentially being a tipping point that could mark the end of Microsoft's dominance.

I read that SketchUp has already been partially ported to O3D already. I'll try to locate the article I read that in.
Here is the article. It does not say SketchUp has partially been ported - but "Google might port Sketchup and Google Earth into O3D"

What I think is a reasonable step.
As already stated in other topics, the main focus will not anymore be in geo-modeling, and currently the low engagement of Google in Sketchup and the not real cross-platform compatibility set a limit to Sketchup.But I think Sketchup will completely change its appearance in some years. Chrome OS (= a browser OS) and 3d in the browser can initiate a new 3d hype and need an efficient modeling tool - maybe in the browser. (I'm not a programer, but I worry about if javascript is efficient enough to be giant leap for mankind)
