[REQ] Roof tile ruby
-
Code Guru's, I'm not sure if one exists, if yes please direct me to it, or if not would it be possible to have a ruby that can tile a roof?
My idea is the have a library of different shaped tiles that will seamlessly tile a roof according to the faces.
Using a texture just is not enough, real mesh would be soo much better.
...a long shot, but maybe, just maybe it's possible.

Something like this would be awesome - http://www.wtools3d.com/swf/online_help/LWCAD_30/shingles/shingles.htm
LWCAD calls it Pat3D tool or Pattern3D. Essentially works with a library of 3D shapes, similar to how Profile builder houses profiles, and then allows the user to equally distribute those shapes in a defined pattern over a selected area. Something like this for sketchup could be used for so many things.....roofs and much more!

That's the idea, thanks for posting that Adam.

This would be cool in SU, max has Roof designer, http://www.batzal.com/
this should be pretty easy, after seeing Round Corners by Fredo, and the amount of extras he was able to put in like visual aids with offsets and that special little toolbar that pops up connected to the frikken SU viewport!!!...

Yeah, the toolbar Fredo has come up with is amazing. Makes me wish all the coders would collaborate and jointly work on perfecting some of the "must have" tools. Could you imagine how good sculpt tools, shape bender or some of the others would be if it incorporated Fredo's toolbar?
As far as a shape tiler ruby goes, I guess the most challenging part of that coding would be fitting the tiled shapes into a defined space and having the edges cut off accurately. It's interesting how LWCAD does it. If you see this video - http://www.wtools3d.com/swf/online_help/LWCAD_30/detailed_sidewalks/detailed_sidewalks.htm It's amazing how you can turn the array of tiled shapes as if it were a texture and have it still fit within the face.
I think a ruby like this would have to start maybe as a hatch tool of some kind, and then have the script fill every face in the hatch with the chosen shape. How would you guys perceive a tool like this functioning?
