A challenge.

Had a go, roughly there but made some schoolboy errors at the start. Fredo's bend tool and tradtional scale were the main tools used. Render done in LightUp!
Hidden Line
LightUp and line overlay - Direct Light Source (AO screen)
Lightup, line overlay - AO

Ooo, well done.

A challenge... really good idea, but I end up spending two hour of work trying to figure out how to make that stuff look real, thanks for that !

Wow, great work MrWip!
-
nice work guys. lightup shadows look really nice btw.

Well for someone who quotes himself in his signature you sure are sensitive
The bends in yours get thicker as they move around the cylinder which is not true to the image. Plus it is no where near as smooth as MrWip's... if you truly want my opinion. -
Thanks Boofredlay ! And sorry Coen... don't let the chalenge upseting you !
By the way, maybe a short explanation of the method could be good(about 99% ruby...)
- Top and bottom parts are done with a f-spline around a circle + a follow me and keep.
-Lateral elements are far more tricky, because there's a double curving in their drawing (in elevation).
So, in 2D : bezier curve + 7 time scale + adjustment to make it clean. Then extrude line + Joint push pull + bend.
This gives us a quarter of the complete shape so, 2 time symmetry, a quick Artlantis rendering and it's done! -
Hypershot render

No, I did not say anything because I did not see it worth commenting on. But since you asked I responded. MrWip's is spot on and I wanted to comment on that.
Truth be told I have tried to make this a couple times and have failed. So cheers to you Coen for making the shape look better than I have been able to. I plan to attempt this again soon. I am trying not to look at any methods used yet as I want to figure it out for myself.

Wow you guys rock !
I wouldn't even know how to start ...Mr. WIP, would you be so kind to make a little (video?) tutorial? I know it is asking a lot of effort but we can learn from people like you.
And indeed, Mr. WIP's version is closest to the original, although the others aren't bad at all .

Hey kwistenbiebel, here is a rapid tutorial to explain a bit better how I've done that thing. It's directly the sketchup model (kind of safe paced tutorial..).
Besides, I'm not found of video tutorials, where there is, for me, too much loosing time between each action... I mean, do we really have to follow constently the mouse to understand an action ...?
I'm for good 'old school' slideshows, which also helps reducing the world bandwidth consumption (some are fighting to save snow bears, why not fighting for bandwith after all...)Also, by making the explanation, I've though of an other method, using more or less only sketchy FFD and bend... maybe someone could give it a try to see where it goes!
... and by the way, I really like your Hypershot render princedragoncok, the DOF and the material quality are perfect (even if the white elements are a bit to "plastic" regarding to the real model)

Thank you. and fair play for the tutorial
