Thanks to all Ruby developers, and more...

Hello everybody!
I'm a young French architect, but an old Sketchup user, an usual Skechucation reader, but I've never post anything so far... So, it's time !
First of all, I really want to thanks all those who continue to create wonderful scripts everyday for this great application.
Seriously, you guys are making it better and better, and it seems that you are even accelerating since some month, regarding to the amount of crazy things that appears recently (who could ever imagine operations like bending , subdivisions, complex surfaces and so on, in Sketchup...).
Working professionally with Sketchup become funnier and a lot easier everyday, and that's a great part of the pleasure we can find in that kind of job !Besides, I've begin to create a website in order to help architects / students learning how to get a grip on the idea of virtual modelling and rendering.
In fact, a lot of subjects that are discuss in Sketchucation forums are really interesting, but I'm quite sure they rarely reach peoples who may need it in their day to day projects. Most of the members have already worked with other applications, or are confident with the concepts linked to the world of 3D, so it's quite hard for people who are really not in that field to catch quickly how it can easily improve their workflow. This remark is not a critic, I just think that more 'bridges' should be builds between architects (especially students ) and modelling knowledge, and Sketchup is the perfect tool for that.
So, this website intend to give clean explanations, based directly on the need of the user and clear cases, trying to take away a bit of the 'bad myth' linked to 3D ( instead of the classic: 'How God, to take a render of my project I have to learn Max because I've heard from the friend of a fiend that it's the most powerful apps, or maybe Maya because I've wanted to have some curve shapes in the first patio, and what the hell is an UV map...' , there is maybe a way to make people think 'With three simple tools I can create all the geometry in Sketchup, and using this render engine my image could be done in a few clics'...that give far more time to think of the sense of the spaces created, and may reduce the stress level of large amount of architects, especially at dusk...).
The site : http://www.wip-archi.com/For now on it is at a really early stage, but you can already found, for example, three lessons focused on Vray for Sketchup, and a bunch of downloadable elements for it ( clear presets and ready to use lights ).
Vray lessons http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-visualiser/vray/I have to apologize because the web site is only in French (if it worked well, an English version will came...), but you may be able to use some elements anyway...
In an other part, I'm explaining to non-SketchupExpert the idea of Ruby, and took the liberty to illustrate them and make them able to be downloaded. If one of the creator should not want me to release them there, just let me know. I've already planned to add the name of the creator on each, but not done yet, again, sorry... With the amount of new script released every week it's hard to keep it up to date, but I will try to do so soon!
Ruby page :http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-construire/sketchup/hors-serie-1/Here are a short selection of my personal works, to give you an idea on the style of design you could find behind this ideas...You can also take a look at the Gallery of the site for more...
Gallery :http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-galeries/Ok.. this post is already long enough, and I will have to made link in other area (like 'Rendering apps' or 'gallery' maybe...).
I'm open to every idea and critics, in order to make this project evolve in the best way possible.Let me know you thought !
ps: I know that the name of the web site, and so my avatar's name, should seems strange to English speakers, but has said before I'm French, and in French it sounds well, dynamic, young, fresh, and all that sort of things...
Also, important, of course all this website project is free, and there is no 'bad hidden intention' to sell anything behind it or through it...Enjoy! -
Welcome!
Crazy "Wip" site!Ps And don't forget that a French Section exists here at SCF
-
Wish I understood French now!
I like your illustrations. I'll be putting some of them in my inspiration folder.
-
i must say, i think what you're trying to do is a fantastic idea, and one that i think is quiote originally and has massive potential! good luck, and you've got some lovely images on there
-
Hello,
Great idea and good luck.
And some great images there on your site. -
Merci a tous !
It's amazing how quick things goes on that forum...just post something, take a break, render one or two small pictures, have a drink, and then, it's ready, you have a full page of responses ! That's really exiting!I will do a lot of update to the site soon (I hope...), especially simple lessons to handle quickly Artlantis, with example and downloadable useful things... I'm also planning to have a new kind of sketchup tutorials, but I'm so busy with my work that I haven't had a second to do so since a looong time...
Wait and see !

Dear MrWip
I enjoyed your blog a lot. You are trying to do in french what I am trying to do in Italian... Let's see how far this takes us
Keep up the good work!
-
well your site is interesting.. a site in english will be better so for us who are interested in your advocacy could understand clearly whats happening. i love listening to french language, but i have difficulty in understanding it.
merci -
Ah guys...I know I know...I should translate it , but I already have barely time to write and create things to update it in French...And I really have a lot of things to say, so, it will come, be patient... Soon (let say some days if everything is fine..) there will be a basic Artlantis training course, to diversify the offer!
It's good to see your interest, it give more motivation to take time for it...
And by the way, at least, I've made a translated version of the Vray Presets an lights:
-
I am looking forward to your artlantis tutorial. I use it a lot, but I see that you have really mastered its possibilities.
I hope it comes soon, until then... good work!!
-
Mr wip, your web site is great! Thank you for the inspiration!
Question: Could any one compare V-Ray and Artlantis a bit?? Do you have a preference when choosing a rendering software for Sketchup? Thanks!
-
Trillium,
In fact, it's possible to compare every renderers, because, finally, they're all able to achieve the same result (more or less). The main question his, in fact, how easy and how efficient will it be to create this picture, with this one or this one...
-
Vray is well inserted into sketchup, and with some efficient presets, you can have a really good result. For example, and that's more than useful for an Architect, making a quick clay render to test a space is one of the most intersting thing with Vray. In addition, view point, face me component, layers are kept just the same than in sketchup, and so you can, for example, add the sketchup edges over the render easily.
When it came to the material edition, it's a bit more tricky... In fact, the link between Vray mat and sketchup one is not always well done, and it require more skills to set up well their properties. -
Artlantis is a complete independent application, and even if the link with sketchup is well done, you're not working directly inside it. All layer setting disappear, all face me component does not move, the focal angles are not matching... so you have to set up things by yourself. But when you begin to adjust materials or light, it's really easy and clear, and you can see the effect immediately. In addition, the render engine is one of the fastest you can find...
So, I think, for someone not specially familiar with 3D rendering (like architects...), Vray is really quick and efficient for concept renders, quick test, and a wide range of original effect (by combining it with the Sketchup styles) and Artlantis is better for a final picture(with more realistic effect in materials).
If you are interested, you can find a tutorial in English for Artlantis here http://www.wip-archi.com/wip-visualiser/artlantis/le%C3%A7on-1-les-bases/

MrWip,
Thank you so much for answering my question and for the link to your tutorial. I must say your tutorial is much MUCH better than the one from the Artlantis team on the same topic! I find their web tutorial really hard to understand, not sure whether it's the language or technical words
I'm using Podium right now for quick tests but I really like the realtime feature in Artlantis, plus I 'm really tempted to get some more levels of design ideas visualized, such as new materials, luminosity, etc, so I finally decided to jump into Artlantis, although I wish it's as easy to learn as Sketchup! Your tutorial provided me with just what I need right now. Thanks a million! ! ! !!!!
By the way, I just had an idea while browsing through your much admired website. I used http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_txt to translate from french to english, and I thought maybe this feature will save you time when you decide to have an english version of you website. Their translation need editing but will be less work than typing everything yourself.
Cheers! -
Good to see that it have been helpfull !
The automatic translation is a really good idea (in fact, I've never really try this kind of tools before... ).
In fact, after some test, the google translation is better, and there are not that much big mistakes or nonsense (just when I'm going off topic...).
For instance, I've quickly check the Vray lessons, and it works quite well... give it a try...
