i ran a search and found nothing, but im sure this would have been requested or explored already and i appologize for any repeats but is there a ruby that put all geometry with a certain material onto its own layer?

Look this, and check if this resolve your problem

        "groupByTexture.rb
Explodes groups and components, regroups faces by material."

        layerbymaterial.rb
Moves faces to layers based on their assigned material.
