Oh please... There's just no pleasing some people.
There are regions in South Africa that have exactly the same problem, with more-or-less the same solution as the mayor suggests. Everyone wins.

Guys,
This mining town is reasonably close to me [1500k's] and yes the ol' mayor has ruffled some feathers. He was quoted in the paper yesterday as saying he stands by his comments and added that the story has done wonders for the Western Queensland township by taking the story global.... [Clever mob of blokes out there...]I recently had a motel built out there [opened at Xmas, 2007] and soon to increase it by 30% as it is doing very well; unfortunately by doing so I am only adding to the imbalance....
BTW ladies, before packing the suitcase, 'doning the tophat and boots' and flying into the sunset, know that flights are very expensive. And expect to share the plane with many other women who only speak 'engrish' and are only in the country for two weeks.
I still wonder what line of work they're in....

Probably the Mayor has read this article as well:

I was stuck in Mt Isa for three days... Hitching in the 80's. What a place. But the people were super nice. The cops brought us soft drinks while we hitched, for crying out loud. An airline crew dropped off full meals once.
Lotsa luck enticing any spunky sheilas out there though! I think one of the prime features of the town was a lead mine.
