DVI Resolution Question
-
So I bought that Westinghouse 25.5" monitor that Dave (dtarch) was raving about. That monitor is so big, it's like being at a drive-in theatre! I'm going to hang it on the wall in my garage and sit in my car with the keyboard.
I hooked it up last night to my PC via the DVI connection on the GeForce FX 5500 video card. The image was great but everything was stretched a bit side to side. I tried adjusting the resolution settings in the nVidia control panel. The last thing I tried was setting it to what the monitor manual calls the "optimum resolution" of 1920x1200. The screen went black and stayed that way. I'd guess 1920x1200 exceeds the video card's capability.
During boot up there is video displayed but once XP is loaded it goes black. I switched to the analog cable and the monitor works although the quality isn't anything to get excited about. The problem is that the card seems to autodetect which connector is being used and, with the monitor plugged into the analog out, I don't get any options for setting the resolution on the digital side. I tried plugging in both cables and switching inputs on the monitor but that doesn't help. I tried plugging the old monitor into the analog (it has no digital) and the new monitor into the DVI out but once XP has started both screens go black. I tried setting the card for dual display which shows in the nVidia control panel but I don't think works on the FX 5500.
So. Any ideas about my next steps? I'm wondering if I can get into the Registry and edit the digital out resolution settings.
This big monitor is actually destined for a new machine which I expect to get (as a kit) next week but with the old monitor on its way out, I'd like to be able to use the DVI output if needed since I plan to keep this machine running awhile longer.
Thanks.
Dave

If your just lookng for a way to be able to run it on the DVI again you could start your computer up in safe mode, adjust all the neccesary settings and then reboot as normal.
Or if your feeling flush you could buy a couple of these: http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_9800gx2.html
I know which id rather go for -
Remus, I did try starting in safe mode but I don't get access to the nVidia resolution settings.
I've got a 9800GT coming for the new computer but I don't think I can use it in the old one without changing a bunch of other stuff.

I thought that a video card will only offer settings it can support. so if the video card is allowing 1900x1200, then it seems like it should be able to do it. But since it can't.....maybe try a lower resolution widescreen format?

Chris, I was able to set a lower resolution with the analog cable connected but it doesn't seem to work on the digital side. On the digital side the screen is black so it's a bit difficult to tell what I'm doing if you see what I mean.
I'm going to try uninstalling the nVidia driver to make the computer use a generic one. Then I'll reinstall the nVidia driver and see if that works.

FWIW, I ended up uninstalling the nVidia driver and then, after hooking the monitor up via the DVI cable, I reinstalled it. Evidently the card can't handle resolution settings as high as the monitor will.
