Doing other peoples work?
-
Friends, Countrymen, Modellers,
Do you sometimes get the feeling that some people only post 'how do I model....?' posts just so they don't have to model it themselves?
This isn't specific dig at anybody because there are genuine people who need help, but I sometimes get the feeling that it would be better to post jpgs instead of models.
Anybody else have the same uneasy feeling?

I have seen a few such questions in the newbie forum, but then something that seems so simple to you or I may be completely foreign to a novice. I know when I first started modeling, I had a few "duh" moments.
I do remember on the old pro forum, towards the end, there were lots of requests for simple components that the requester could have done themselves (I thought), and felt they were just lazy. Fortunately, I haven't noticed that here.

I agree that is one thing that has seemed to be left in the old forum and the request that are more recent are real cries for help and not laziness.
But it is something that needs to be considered when spending time modelling.

I must be missing the threads, because pretty much all the requests I've seen seem to be genuine inquiries to find things out rather than a request to do a model for them.
If I'm doing a model to show a way to do something then I'll do the quickest, roughest example anyway. If someone chooses to do an accurate detailed model that could be taken and used that's their own choice, but I wouldn't think it was a choice many people would make.

The way I see it is if there indeed are people that are as said above are too lazy to make their own models and request them from citizens of SCF then after a while their requests will be ignored as a habit of free requests will be noticed as well as comments made. That same person would also not learn anything if he/she indeed was doing such requests hence they would be dependent on free models to complete assignments.
I have not noticed anything like this on this site yet, requests are generally from genuine newbies that do need a solution.
On the flip side we have awesome members here at SCF (the friendly place) that enjoy helping folk and demonstrating their skills (I am one of them) and would oblige in any way possible if time allows to help anyone that has a need, however if I felt it was taken advantage of I would refrain from helping.

Amen Brother and may it long continue

Yes, you have to hope no one is really doing this, but I guess the odd person could.
As solo mentioned, people really do enjoy helping others out here and generally like to take on the challenge of modelling these requests.
You only have to check out the Newbie Forum to see this. A simple request gets posted and 1 hour later, 5 or 6 good answers and examples -
I agree with Daniel on this, to a lot of more experienced modelers knocking up a bench could be a matter minutes, but to someone whos only recently started in 3D it could be a long and laborious process with often mediocre results at the end.
I suppose this is all part of the learning experience though, so i suppose its just about striking a balance between modeling for free and helping people learn.
