Does anyone know anything about this? It seems like good opportunity to create and make profit at same time. I heard of it some time ago but paid no attention. It appears to be growing in popularity. A virtual world of sorts, where real transactions are made.

Bartels it I can see some of your cribs in this environment or anyone from this creative group of people. I think the sketch bunch should build there own Island;)

The FormFonts management looked at the possibilities quite intently some time ago and decided it wasn't worth the effort...too many downsides. If the idea was presented in the Dragons Den, the verdict would be that there was too much competition and copycat potential in this field for it to ever make much of a return.

Many of the models are pretty basic by SU standards and people are now building the likes of obj importers so that any freebie out there can be imported for use or tweaking in the program's own modeller. You can bet that if very few people are prepared to spend money on content in their professional life, when time is money, then they certainly aren't going to do it in their recreational time.

When looked at in detail, the whole phenomenon resembles a kind of pyramid. I don't mean it's pyramid selling, but the overheads structure is such that people that got in early are probably doing very nicely, but anyone joining later will find themselves slaving away in the hopes of emulating them, but actually getting nowhere fast.

I'm pretty sure there's another book for sale as well because I remember seeing one on sale in B&N.

There was an article in 3DWorld Magazine about second life sometime last year. I'll probably dig it out tomorrow and give a summary on here.

I'm always very wary of the "How to make money with...." types of books/schemes, John. If you found a way of doing it, wouldn't you keep it to yourself?
By contrast, if you found it wasn't all that easy, wouldn't you be tempted to get people to part with their money in another way by writing a book, telling them how easy it was? ๐Ÿ˜‰
