Well I sure got my exercise yesterday. My daughter and I went for a "small" hike on a local "mountain". Hill really. Well it took over 2 hours and kicked my butt. My daughter started to complain a little bit but she was just happy to be there for the most part. We even took a wrong trail and ended up in a culdesac. Backtrack about 10 min and we were on our way back up the mountain. My legs still ache.

Hi Eric - on what to eat when... well there are a few schools of thought and I think they depend on your metabolism. One idea is that you need to fuel your workout...so having some form of easily digestible protein about 50 minutes before a workout is what you need to power it. I have done that to good effect. Some form of power bar that does not contain sugar may be right for you, about an hour before an activity. It's important to drink or pre-hydrate too. Not enough so that you puke as soon as you start exercising!

There is another school of though however...the Shaolin school which I adhere to now. That is not to eat for at least three hours before physical exercise. The theory is that you do not want to take Qi (Chi or Ki) energy away from supplying your extremities and send it to you digestive system. I will do my morning exercises on an empty stomach, and then eat my breakfast (lately that's been organic non-fat unsweetened yogurt with fresh fruit, nuts, grains, and Flaxseed.) I will then do my pre-noon exercises just before lunch. Usually from 11:45 to 12:15 and then I'll eat lunch.

If you ever want a quick energy boost, try an organic local apple and banana about an hour before you exercise. That'll give you some extra energy!

Sometimes I will eat the offspring of my enemies for a high protein, pre-battle snack! ๐Ÿ˜‰ ....kidding...

Coen - I agree. The sport of fighting, with the real emotion of survival can be very rewarding! The ability to brush off punishment and attain a higher level of awareness seems to awaken the human animal in a way that other pursuits cannot. I am told that you are quite tall..a large man. I would enjoy the challenge of competing with you! I am not a large man, physically, but spiritually I feel larger than most. I am 5' 7" tall and weigh 132 pounds...strangely, the exact same dimensions as Bruce Lee. I have studied his training methods for many years and adapted his "style-less form" for myself. If you are fans of Adobe's Digital Video Suite, you will see my name on the credits for Adobe Encore DVD, the product that I co-developed and worked on before SketchUp...if you continue to watch the credits, you will see a special thanks to Bruce Lee. My teammates put that in for me in honor of my spirit and tenacity, which is why they also called me "little dog". That note in the credits was a large honor for me. His Martial brilliance has always been an inspiration in my life, and the Shaolin way resonates in my soul. The basis for which is; always do what's right. That comes to eating, sleeping, treating others with respect, and not being afraid of daunting challenges. Sparring is one of those intense activities that brings into focus facing one's fear, and raising one's spirit or Qi. I always believed there would be more polite people if they had to face their peers in a ring or on a mat. It can certainly bring ones ego into check, eh?!

Well, I hope that you and I get to sit together and talk Martial Arts some time.

        Cheers,

         - CraigD
