I'm looking at getting a 15.4" laptop [probably an Assus or Dell Vostro, with Win XP] and using it mainly connected to a new 24" monitor..again probably a Dell. All the laptops in my price range seem only to have a VGA [rather than a DVi option] connection to an external monitor. So, is it worth spending good money on a monitor if the image via VGA is going to be just average?

Im also watching the thread on the nVidia 8600GT...rather depressingly, just about every new laptop, running Vista seems to have a 8600GT card.

      TIA

If I can find a lead later today when I get back from work I can test this for you stu.

I have recently purchased a Sony 15.4 laptop with only vga.
My main workstation uses 24" widescreen Dell monitor via dvi.

Just thinking stu, are you only planning to use this monitor via the vga laptop?
If so I guess buying a dvi monitor would be pointless (if there was a significant price difference)
If I was going to use the monitor with another computer which has dvi then I would personally go with a dvi monitor.

          Dylan,
Sounds like your just the guy to be talking too πŸ˜„
My guess is that most new monitors these days can run VGA or DVI.
At this stage I need the occasional portability of a laptop but was hoping not to have to buy a workstation as well...so the projected use of the monitor would be with the laptop only.
And, out of interest, how do you find the 24" Dell?

I find the Dell 24" great.
At the time of purchase I did a lot of research and it came out very well in tests, with the added bonus is looks gorgeous imo.

It worked very well with my laptop on testing, maybe not quite as good as direct from the dvi on my workstation, but possibly I needed to spend longer setting it up. I just plugged it in as default settings, it adjusted itself and looked good!

              Thanks Dylan, sounds good!
Dell have a bundle deal where the monitors are a couple of hundred dollars cheaper if purchaced with a lappie.

My roommate has a 22" widescreen samsung, and it is connected to his laptop through VGA however, the screen does show a little flicker when the laptop isnt connected through a charger, really strange. He does however know that it's the fault of the VGA of the LAPTOP, not of the screen seeing the screen preformed fine on aswell VGA as DVI on my computer and on the DVI output on a laptop in a workstation (thuss also powered).

Don't know if the same thing is the case with you but I recommend testing it in the store where you buy it!

                  Thanks for that info Rob.
Dell doesn't have any stores around here so I will probably just take a chance.....but anyway I will need to upgrade my desktop sooner or later.
