This is a project that I started posting on the SU Gallery forum (rip). I'm moving all my images to this thread.

This first image is the most current, now with all three wings! πŸ˜„

Man that is fantastic. Makes me want to learn to fly.
I think I saw the early stages of this on the old forum.
How long have you spent on it?

Another view with some added detail.

I've been working on and off on the model for about 9 months. It's an escape from architecture, which consumes 99% of my modeling efforts. I've been using drawings from the net, but have lots of holes in my documentation. when I can find additional documentation or photos I will add and revise.

My ultimate goal is to model all the mechanical systems in the aircraft including the original engine, an Oberursel-Ur2.

                Thanks for the comments,

I can't wait until get to the engine! That would be my favorite part with this piece. I just like engines. Heh.

                    Engine WIP...

Slow going lately, working on wing struts and spars and the engine. The engine is probably 2/3 done, still needs spark plugs, magneto and carburetor on rear, and prop flange. πŸ˜„

Here's an image of the engine. [need to figure out where to host, image too big]

                    let's try this:

Make it red, please. With a white flag/black cross on top of the highest wings. Manfred Von Richthofen deserves it, he made this plane famous.

http://www.collectors-edition.de/f-t-s_titel_english.htm says they have the complete set of drawings for sale, not cheap btw. They have 60 example drawings as free download. You probably knew, but better safe than sorry. BTW Engels E1 is the name of the exact replica of Fokker D1, maybe a bit confusing.

                          Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Maggie; yes I have mined Herr Engels information (even bought a membership to his site) and have gotten a lot of useful detail info. There are however, large holes in the info which I can get without paying a few G's for the complete set of drawings.

I do plan to texture the entire model with the appropriate material, i.e. spruce, fir, painted metal frame, steel, etc.

I'm not sure exactly what color scheme I will use for the red version. Most red triplanes are historically inaccurate, I want to be as accurate as I can be with the info that I can find. There are individuals that are fanatical about documenting the history of this interesting aircraft. There where only three hundred or so aircraft that went into service, for less than a year at the end of the war (1917-18). The original aircraft are extremely scarce, along with original parts. The US does not even have an original DR.1 in any museum on it's soil.

                          More to come...

                          Regards,

That's a great looking engine so far! Nice detail on the heat fins and the rocker arms! Can't wait to see it when she's ready to be started! πŸ˜‰

Strange that there are so few left. I can remember that when I was a child in the summer there were always two triplanes (perhaps later models) flying with banners over the beach. I later heard that these two were turned into scrap metal when they were no longer safe to fly in.
Was being a plane fan out of fashion for quite some years? I guess an original triplane in the worst possible condition should fetch a fortune on Ebay today.

Such a beautiful model. That first render is spectacular; it reminds me of why I fell in love with SketchUp way back when. The simplicity and precision with which it can explain complexity. Excellent work.

Yeah, I agree Mark! I also like that the wings cast shadows but do not accept them! You gotta love being able to control the 3D universe like that!! It's one of the reasons I got out of film making and into 3D Graphics!

Love the plane! I'm going to have to pass this thread onto WilliamT (whom hasn't joined these forums yet) but I know he always loves modelling planes with SU

I would be interested to know how large the file size is so far/at the end

                                      keep up the good work!

What makes me curious is if you pun in all the hidden object like pistons and crack shafts as well? If so, than it would be very serious competition for mister Engels' drawings.

Here's an updated engine photo. Not quite done yet, still working on back of engine. Working on engine mount and propeller now also.

Maggie, don't think I'll be doing the internal parts of the engine; maybe a project for the future? 8O
