Revised an old steam train model I did some time ago in Sketchup and rendered it in V Ray.
      Comments most welcome.

Done in Sketchup 2015 and rendered in V Ray for sketchup 2.0.

Pretty cool job. ๐Ÿ˜„ I don't get American steam engines though. It's as if the wheels and everything are floating in mid air and there's no frame ๐Ÿ˜ฎ It looks normal on cars but on trains it's plain weird for me

If you mean the front wheels they are not driver wheels, I believe they are there to negotiate curves and to support the front portion of the boiler and is supported underneath the frame.

            Great start!
Maybe add some dirt map to the red paint ? Saturate more the background, add some smoke ?

Was the smoke added in something like photoshop?

Iโ€™d like to add some dirt/grease to the underside and some patina to the metals for an aged look. Adding bump mapping was simple enough but mixing maps so far for me has been difficult to work with in Sketchup-V Ray. So far I have not found any good tutorials for V Ray Sketchup on line anywhere that shows how to do a good dirty map.

              But I'll keep trying.

I don't use v-ray but sketchup can use textured materials fine enough - it's just that the projection methods, specifically for cylindrical objects, are pretty haphazard last time i've checked...

Yes the smokes was added in photoshop using just the paint brush with a couple of different tones and transparency passes.
I don't use Vray but I am sure you can add some other texture except the bump map, see which material type allows you to do that.
Anyway, at times postprocessing is faster and simpler.

                    Thank Lz , ely862me,

Mapping is a pain on round object in SKU, and I have the Sketchup mapping tool but unlike 3d max I do not have the control over the placement of the map as you do can in Max.

I am still new to V Ray and trying to learn more as I find time. in the mean time I will add some maps and work with them,

                        Really nice model and render...
It is a pity that the smoke is clearly post pro...
I think you could do much better if you installed some Real smoke brushed for Photoshop...
(Make a Google search using the words and you'll find some great free brush libraries...)

                        Cheers
