We've been having a conversation about stolen Models and stolen Intellectual Property and I had an idea that might be useful. Humor me for a moment if you will.

Many websites want to offer free models and 3D content for their users that are submitted by their users, this is a wonderful business plan, but difficult to manage from a Intellectual Property Rights point of view. Not only must an owner try to dissuade users from submitting stolen works, but they must also try to know when work is stolen. Incredibly difficult for a few people to know every model on Earth, where it came from and who owns it.

I won't go in to copyright law and how it varies from nation to nation, but I will point out that in some nations there is no such thing as a copyright.

So how does one approach this issue from an ethical standpoint and also be effective at filtering out these stolen models?

I propose an Intellectual Property Protection Program.

      How it works...

      1. a plugin is created for various software that accomplishes the same goal in each, it creates a data file such as a .csv. that shows the proportional distance between intersecting vertices. ie construction point type places throughout a model.

      Example.

      A modeler creates a model.

      1. The modeler then uses the IPP Tool to make a csv file "copyright Protection file" that documents the vertices locations of his model.

Visual Example of CSV file. This would actually be a text file consists of rows of
      0,0,0-0,0,1-0,1,0-1,0,0 etc...
      IPP-Tool-002.JPG

      1. This CSV file would then in turn be uploaded to a website where this author had a membership, a main database website that held all of the willing participant's csv files. A Intellectual Property Protection Union of types.

      2. A website owner or model distributor uses the website by running the same plugin on submitted models and then using a database query tool to see if a duplicate or a close approximation exists and is protected.

Instead of being checked by actual differences in distance between two vertices intersections, I would think that a check of proportionality would be better. Probably harder to do though... That way all "Boxes" would sound an alarm. Then a website owner could see the flag and know they need to investigate closer. This would keep people from slightly scaling a model and then claiming it as their own. It would also take care of dimensional differences in model building. Meters/Feet etc.

Model "warehouses" could use the plugin to check their stocks for stolen work, people downloading content from unknown sources could use it to check models before using them in their own works.

So what do you think? Is it a good idea? Can it be done? Should it be done? Do you care?
