Sketchup is a really powerful software, we are able to do anything with it. Even create very interesting 3D character uniform. I am not racist at all but i love the uniform of the Third Reich.

Impressive work Herr Harold, is this part of a larger scene including aircraft ?

I must echo that sentiment, it's a pity that those uniforms are so closely tied with such dark and fearful events in history. They cut an impressive figure.

Really nice work, Harold. Difficult to really see them, could you show some more, and larger, views?

Not to be picky, but these are even smaller than the original pic.

No problem 😄 Thanks all for your nice comments.

Solved. You can download this model here:

I downloaded your model, excellent work!

                    Just a few suggestions -

Examining your Materials Folder, it looked like you had not just the insignias used in your model, but every insignia ever used in the German army 😲 .

Purging deleted 98 of these unused textures, and decreased the size of your model from 34,323KB to just 6,598KB.

Even after I purged the unused insignia, it looks like you have multiple instances of some textures. Here's one example -
                    a.png

for efficiency you should use only one instance of each material.

Noticed that you had 61 groups but no components. By using components you could decrease the file size a lot more. There are a number of instances where you could make an item a component and just copy that component (boots, legs, arms, hat, buttons, etc). When you copy a component it does not increase the file size of the model.

I hope you don't take offense at my observations, just trying to offer a few suggestions to a fellow modeler, who obviously has talent in abundance. Looking forward to seeing more great models from you.

I totally agree but can you explain how to purge those unusual textures? I know that Sketchup does it automaticly when i post the model on the web but i would like to do it myself. Btw, those unusual textures come from other models, copy, cut, paste, remove... + upgrading textures.

Thanks for the components feature, i didn't know it before. All advice are good to improve models 😄

There are several ways to purge your model. One is to click on "Window", then "Statistics", and then do a purge

A better way is install a great little plugin from TIG, which can be found here
                        http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=307
I use this all the time, and it does much more than the first method I mentioned.

Without too much trouble I got your model down to less than 1/8 of it's original size. This could be decreased even further if you reduced the file size of several of your textures. Two of them weigh in at about 750KB each, pretty big.

I'm always battling to keep my model size to a minimum, originally to keep them under the 10mb limit for posting on the Warehouse, but now just to keep them as small as possible so that it doesn't bog down SU. If you need any more tips just search the forums here, they are chock full of good information, and a lot of very knowledgeable people (much more knowledgeable than me) more than willing to help out any way they can.

Glad I could help out in some small way. As I said, I'm really looking forward to seeing more of your work. Making realistic clothing in SU is difficult, and you seem to have mastered it. I tried making clothing once. Only once 😒

I'm not sure if it was the Third Reich's or SS uniforms that were actually designed by Hugo Boss, bit weird when you think about it!

Very nicely done, Harold. Interested in seeing what you do with these (assume it is for a scene your modeling).

Luftwaffe uniforms were blue-gray; yours appear dark charcoal. The Third Reich had some neat uniforms, but their designs, and Germany's "uniformania" was not a purely Third Reich manifistation, but developed under the Second German Empire and Prussian militarism.

                              My avatar is an anachronism.

Yes, the colour of the Luftwaffe's uniform had to be changed. In the following next model, i think we can agree that the colour is ok now.

                                Oberleutnant der Luftwaffe:

No plan to make a complete scene, but you can do it if you want 😄 Just plan to makes all the uniforms, but i know yet it's impossible, because there are so many...

                                Thanks for your kind comment.

Nice work Harold, would you not consider UV mapping a customised material to the uniform instead of using multiple materials?
