A Chair From a 2 x 6

I was poking around on the net and found this chair someone had made from a 10' length of 2 x 6 lumber. That'd be 3.048 m of 150mm x 50mm lumber (what's the metric word for lumber?) Another fellow did a video showing how he drew it in SketchUp so I thought I'd have a go, too.

These are typically the chairs that break/collapse when I sit on them.

I can see how the wing parts might be splined or dowelled to the main sections. Would that be just an interlocking notch (maybe mortise) joint for the two mains?

Those sorts of competitions come up every once in awhile on the woodworking forums. It is simply amazing what some folks manage to tease out of a single board. The problem around here is that construction lumber is usually so lousy, much of a board would be waste.
Tim, the wings are indeed attached with dowels and the two main pieces are connected with a "halving joint", the same notch cut in both pieces. I think that joint would be left unglued so the chair can be knocked down for storage.

Then I would "gild the lily" with some Stanley hardware at that joint, in case Csaba comes over.

This idea uses just under 10' of 6x2" to make a 'stool' for Csaba !
Glued and screwed together it'd be pretty indestructible...

Those are nice, Dave. I would say the design should be for a portable, two or three piece assembly. Where's the video?

TIG, that still might be a bit lightly built for Csaba.
Brooke, I agree with you. I wouldn't use any hardware to join the seat and backrest.

Used to do Medieval recreation for fun, these chairs were popular. The 2 x 12 chair variant was very similar, and quite portable. Here's an example:

The image saves lazy guys from DL'ing a model without seeing it. Yours looks nice; maybe a little thin in the scroll back rest members? You've got the important to me interlock for breakdown / portability that the master's original post lacked. Perhaps we'll hear from him.
