New Nokia 808 PureView, 41 megapixels camera phone
-
A new Nokia 808 PureView camera phone. I bet most will not understand the concept of super-pixels and fall to blame that 41 megapixels is insane No idea if this will be available as a windows phone, but Maybe it does not matter for such niche device.

Yikes, that's probably 30 too many, and here I thought my new iPhone had a great camera.
-
Not too many as there is some internal scaling for better quality, final images will not be that high resolution, but 5 MP photos or something like that if you want quality in low light conditions... better watch those sample images.
Supported aspect ratios and resolutions True 16:9 (2 MP, 5 MP [Default], 8 MP, 41 MP) 4:3 (3 MP, 5 MP, 8 MP, 41 MP)
Video resolutions: Full HD (1920x1080) 30fps [Default], HD (1280x720) 30fps, nHD (640x360) 30fpsHave not done comparisons for image quality. But in principle just think it as a camera (phone) that uses super-sampling and you have a good idea how to operate with it

Very fleeting info in the commercial. I guess they didn't want to bruise any brains. I would put the commercial on a par with the Korean Air commercial which was mostly air, anyway.
Now, regarding this camera. That is very interesting. -
Did find some nice video review and updated the first post. Darn... hate to wait to see one in real life. I almost temped to say that point and shoot cameras are now dead. For me a best camera is one that I always carry with.
Personally I not thrilled with oldish OS, but what I seen with some other Nokia phones, Symbian is fairly usable with latest version - not that awkward one tries to make it sound. Anyhow, it appears that the camera tech will find it's way to Nokia windows phones later. Nokia EVP Jo Harlow said that PureView technologies will come to "other devices" eventually. -
Some real life sample of pureviews superior sound capture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oue6G4a_xCc&hd=1 (personally I'd turn off image stabilization) and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WPDVBFA2YQ&hd=1.

Seems promising.
The use of oversampling in digital audio has been standard for a very long time now - it allows for much less severe anti-aliasing filters to be used (i.e. deliberate blurring to avoid artefacts). The impossibility of making a perfect anti-aliasing filter that butts right up to the limit of the output resolution was one of the reasons for the relatively poor top-end of early CD players etc.(high frequencies being analogous to detail in images). Sampling the signal at a higher rate than you really need relaxes the engineering tolerances required of the filtering, enabling improved quality.
The theory behind digitising signals is the same regardless of the analogue source, or the number of dimensions, so it seems perfectly sensible that digital images should start to use the same processes that are now considered standard in the more mature field of digital audio.
Can't wait to hear them try to explain to consumers when they start deliberately adding noise to the images to make them look better (dithering)! -
New Lumia 920 got a pureview camera too. Just a different kind - this a for low light situations, with OIS and BSI sensor (8.7MB).
