I too was about to ask what tools and techniques were used, but then I realized that I wouldn't be able to use any of them, so why ask.

I'm very touched!
In fact I can't remember a modeling I have done into SketchUp which equal for long what Numb delivers to us here.You may think rather to things I had modeled with Sculptris I guess. This dedicated soft to organic is far easy in comparison...

TBH I was wondering if Sculptris would be a smarter choice for this kind of work.

Thank you so much dear Slaven + +This one was done with a mouse. I now have a super tablet.
Sculptris is a good choice, but you have to manage import export, and simplify the mesh.
Help this with Meshlab is a good idea.
