Col. A L Hawkins of the 10th Pennsylvania Volunteers

This project is built from a photo match. Right now I am hung up with the people at Poser as I try to retrieve a lost serial number. The Colonel is a flat image on the wall and I plan to build him up in 3D. Mainly I want to use Poser to do the head and features. I may even do the body in SU. I am also looking for a very large piece of white, lightly veined and weathered marble (the original monument is over 100 years old).

This is a fun project due to the personal connection.

        Roger,

Would PhotoSculpt http://www.photosculpt.net/ be of use for making a 3D of Col. A L Hawkins?

Looking forward to seeing how your project progresses. Are you going to try to import the poser figure into SU, or the other way around?

Mike Photosculpt would be a great tool, but my wife says I can't buy any tools that I don't already have a paying project to justify.

Have you tried that before? I did so, once - it was a large file, as Poser models are very detailed, and there were way too many polygons lines that needed the hide tool.

I have successfully used Poser models, I have poser 6 so do not know about the newer versions, but when exporting you can remove a lot of mesh that's not needed, like say your model is clothed then remove all the body parts beneath the clothing that will not show, if mouth is closed then remove teeth and tongue, this reduces the model dramatically.

If you need to reduce further then using a poly reducer will be very helpful, I use Deep Exploration for this.

                    Head built in poser
Poser has been a bit of a challenge. Here I have imported the Poser model into SU. The mesh imports into SU but it was not skinned. Skinning the mesh was tedious. I understand the latest release of PhotoShop will let you paint directly on a model. I think that is how I want to proceed. But first I need to build a monumental mustache for the Colonel.

And now a mustache and a hat. Of course we need eyeballs at some point.

A diversion from the overall modeling project
I little illustrative relief in the midst of building the virtual model.

Sometimes you learn a little more about your relatives than you would like. Further research in the archives of the "New York Times" shows that Col. Hawkins and a Col. Streator were indicted for having a soldier strung up by his thumbs. It seems that a Pvt. Iams, while in ranks, cheered the news that a Mr. Frick, chairman of Carnegie Steel, was shot by an anarchist.
