I was thinking of creating some kind of outer space scene, but I am somewhat confused about the use of light sources. What would you suggest? HDRI ? Single source lightning?

dear mate, it depends on your decision, if it would be a vacum space, then the contrast is high, so you may have a main direct light , and another (week one) to lighten the black parts, a-bit. or you may imagine that it is near the earth (maybe the flood scene) , then a HDDRI may helps
