HMY britannia 1893 (WIP)

Well I have been spending time watching everyone doing amazing models of these they enjoy...I felt perhaps it was time to try to do the same. Normally I just do work for school or clients, which I enjoy, however I sorta wanted to play. One of my passions is history and the age of sail. I have never sailed in my life but I find it is absolutely majestic. So since I have been unable to set up my tools and continue building this vessel in wood (I'm about a third of the way done building it IRL) I thought it I would attempt to build it in sketchup. A perfect model to try to learn organic modeling. So as I have time I will show progress here and there. These first ones are getting the general hull contour worked out so it is accurate and beginning the deck. I will be fine tuning this contour as I go.

Ok. Just got these resized. A start on the decking and refining the hull shape. The top four strakes are now contoured correctly. I haven't trenailed the deck yet and or have I finished the railing yet. So eventually the grain will be placed correctly and it will have all the proper jointing. But that is for another day.

As the Chinese say, "A journey of 10,000 miles starts with just one step." I salute anybody who takes on a job of this scale.

The hull has been the hardest for me so far. I tried a great deal of plug ins to try to get the contours right and in everycase it just didn't look right. So I have been hand stitching it. Which is alot on an approx. 100 ft hull. I started by building a few framing ribs and using arch and bezier curves to get it close. I then stitch between them. Once I had the hull close I began using fredoscale on areas of arch to start scaling areas to begin to form the shape. This has been very time consuming but rewarding. There is an area where I am actually redoing it for the third time to reduce the geometry. So I will be working on that a few strakes at a time so I don't get too bored or frustrated with it. Then I will just continue to work on other details. So I am learning alot.
And Roger I have to say thank you because it was your cannon that really inspired me to try this. So this should be fun. Take forever...but fun.

Thanks Dolphus. See if I can aspire to your level of detail. Maybe difficult with this one though. The plans for the britannia are held by the british royal family and for the last several years have been lent to a Russian builder who is working on a replica. So all I have to go from are a couple of photos from Beken of Crowes and others. Not alot of info, so in the end I will probably be taking a little artistic license based on other vessels. See how it goes.

Absolutely no problem with the artistic licence route, sometimes more interesting than reality...but good luck
