The Art of SketchUp - part 2: Sci-Fi

Very nice.
You are allready a winner. However, there are a few in the contest that have very very impressive ships.Good luck
-
@ Shura: haha, that's the idea. Thank you.
@ Liam: Yes, I did carefully read the rules and was wondering how to break them without being disqualified. Rules are made to be broken, right? I browse all the other entries and most of them (the best ones) somehow broke the rules. Technically, we added more to the submission. Anyway, I think the most important parts are the 6 views as the colored render is optional. I believe this contest is not about who can have the best render but who can give them what they need to build a starship, which is the schematic line drawing . People at CCP have their own textures and set of colors for each race already. So this is my strategy, if I give them the best line drawing with details in real and accurate dimensions, I will have more chance to get a prize.
My other plan is actually to sell them the model if I win. They want the line drawing to build their model. But why do it when they can actually have the real model. I am guessing, it will take more than 3 weeks (working 4-5 hours a day) for a Maya or Max user to build this kind of detailed model. So they will save time and money if they buy mine. It's a win-win situation.
So I may not be able to give you the model, if assuming I win and they want to buy my model. Will see.
Take care,
_KN

Just an idea for the contest: I play a bit of Eve, so "Typhon" is awfully close to "Typhoon" a ship in an enemy faction. You might not want to actually name the ship, allowing CCP to do that as they have naming schemes.
I was thinking of submitting with an Angel faction ship (seen by unknown pilots and only recently confirmed as a background story.) But I am no where even close to as good, my ideas might be good, but can't get them to form very well. Only recently picked up plug-ins.
I wish you the best, though I will probably be shooting at yours rather than flying it. Though it looks like it could certainly put a dent in anything it comes across.

Holding thumbs for you Ken....you ARE a winner..the best!!! Good luck

wheres the bow icon!!!! i cant find it!!!! hehe well you know what i think of your work, an inspiration brother!!

@ Solidseal: Thanks for your kind words. Yes, there are many great submissions. It will be a tough decision for the judges.
@ Ghalko: Thanks for the feedback. I am not an Eve player and did not know much about the Eve universe till this contest. I just checked, and you were right, there is ship named Typhoon. Oh well...it's not a big deal...they can always rename my ship. LOL
@ Thank you for you support, Mr. Cochrane.
@ Thank you for your nice comment, Teo. I am glad my sketchup models are an inspiration to you. Your Vray renders really inspire me to learn and improve my Vray skills.
Have a nice day!

looks great by the way, you far exceeded my expectations on this job!Hi Liam,
Thanks for your kind words. Honestly, I wasn't sure where I was going and how the model would end up looking like. I just kept on working, adding details and figuring out at the same time how to model some parts of the starship. It's kind of a trial and error since it is the first time I did such a big detailed model.
Glad to hear you did finish yours. Which one was it by the way? Could you please send me the link?
Best,

Sharing some old student projects.
Modelled in Sketchup and exported into Studio Max for texturing and rendering.
Have a great day,

ahh no you misheard I never submitted but im going to make one anyway just for fun as I have more free time now and no looming deadlines I just posted some pre-lim work but its subject to change. I think I want the ship vertical orientated and change the whole design but still keeping some of the core components I have still modeled.

EVE Online Contest
The 15 finalists were chosen and I am quite disappointed with the judging.
I did not even get in!
Lots of people commented and disagreed with the chosen ones.
You can see them here:
Oh, well...it was not a waste of time for me as it was quite a great experience working on my starship and improving my Sketchup modeling skills.
Thanks for all your kind comments and support during the 3 weeks I was working on the Starship.

Ken I had a look at the other entrants and I must say I am astounded that your ship was not included, one can only wonder what the "judges" are smoking, in my opinion I would have been disappointed if you were not voted No 1, you been robbed......

Hey there,
Here's a personal project I did a couple of years ago.
Buildings and cars are modeled in Sketchup and the rest as well as the final render was done in Photoshop.
Have a great one,

So the creature is a 2d painting?
Well done, you need a sculpture app Ken. Its time to involved with this.
I could work some more on shadows, a hard-light overlay of a wall-plaster-painted tex could do the GI trick. -
the Giant Spaceship is clearly a Masterpiece
incredible !!
thanks for posting
-
So about that awesome spaceship:
Another chance has come up, very similar rules but this time all Eve community feedback. http://www.evecontest.com/finalvote/
I might try but a 3 week window is really too small for someone with many ideas but no solid spaceship experience such as myself. Hope you resubmit, it would get my vote.
Let me know if I should post a separate thread or something.

I have Z-brush on my computer but never had the time to practice. It is certainly on my list to do (or should I say to learn). You mentioned about 3D Coat. I will take a look. Thanks!

@ Ghalko: Wow, that is pretty cool. Thanks for the notice. How did you hear about it? I will certainly submit my starship again. Thanks for you vote.
To Liam: Are you there? If you are reading this, you now have a chance to enter. But I guess you might be busy with school lately. I have not seen you in the forum for a while. Anyway, hope all is well and that you will be able to enter the contest.
Have a great day everyone!

I heard about it because I play the game. It would be nice to see some more ships out there.
There are some NPC corporations or factions that don't have any ships to their credit. Sisters of Eve (careful with any web searches) is a humanitarian faction that does rescues and relief efforts, but it really doesn't have any of its own ships. Something along the lines of white ships with red (like the red cross) decals. The ship(s) wouldn't have to be quite as complex as your awesome one so they might not take as long.
One thing I noticed is that even though the rules are similar it definitely sounds like the 6 views plus the one colored (hopefully rendered) one is all they want. Also it is a bit more of how the ship would fit into the game so that whole Sisters of Eve thing might not be a good way to go. So if you want ideas just let me know.

@ Bryan/Ghalko: Please check your private message and get back to me when you have time.
Hi guys,
ASGVIS/V-Ray for Sketchup just had a Featured Artist article about me.
There are a couple images that were mainly done for the interview and not posted anywhere else. Here's one of them:
I have been working on a few more but did not have time to finish them. I will post them later.
Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!
