A Classical Guitar
-
I started this project with a classical guitar, as I thought it would be a little easier than a steel string, which I intend to do next. This one is a little incomplete in that it doesn't have all the internal bracing, purflings etc, but it is built to scale. With the steel string I would like it to have all parts, scaled and made as components, and use it as a design that I can build from.
The model, for me was quite a challenge and gave me a chance to refine skills in rubies like Tigs Extrude Edges by Rails, without which I could never have modeled the heel, and Draw Metal, which allows for some incredible tapers.
So I guess this is a work in progress.
The rendering is in Kerkythea, and I confess not spending much time on the scene.
Anyways thought I'd share, and thank the Ruby masters once again.

nice one, Dale!
it deserves some improvements, starting from a better lighting and higher render settings. A guitar you can show to guitarists is a difficult modeling work and I see you've done very well but a closer view (or a higher size) is needed to appreciate the details. looking forward next updates

Thanks tridem. Here are a couple of quick detail renderings.I'd love to spend the time to create a proper scene with better lighting, and if I get the time I will.
I really wasn't so much thinking of this as a rendering project, (but who can resist) more to see if I'll be able to accurately enough model the components of a guitar to alter designs and build from it. There are still a few rough spots, but I think I can work them out.

Excellent work so far there dale.
In your model, did you use real world dimensions or did you size everything up to avoid problems with tiny triangles, and so forth?
I have a steel string guitar model not rendered except with Sketchup toon colors. I even put the manufacturer's logo on the headstock. At the time of doing the heel, only Chris Fullmer's Loft tool was available. I did the strings with helix and lines2tubes. There are a lot of inaccuracies because I modeled in real world dimensions. And the skp file is about 5 mb. -
Thanks mitcorb
I built it to exact specs in John Bogdanovich's Book "Building the Classical Guitar a Modern Approach". I did scale it up to work on it, and was back and forth between imperial and metric depending on what I was modeling. I had difficulties modeling where the head and neck joined, so there are some compromises there, and I didn't spend any time on the strings, again more concentrating on the actual detail of the model.
I tried to actually load the .skp file to the forum but even zipped it's about 12 megs, about 19 unzipped.Another quick render.

Last one for right now. That damn work gets in the way of all my fun. Thanks for the comments.
