thank you and your nice collection. All materials showed in models are useful.
Forgive my poor english. -
I want to thank all of you ´sketcharchitects´ for your wonderful job, recreating all those impressive Roman structures.
You are helping change the world. The real one, by providing ways of studying the past in such a wonderful manner, getting inside of it.
I have downloaded all Roman models created by you and I really love them... a lot!
L.VII.C, Danik, saikindi,MorBius and all the others who have contributed in a way or another to make this ancient times' database... You are our Vitruvii!!

Hi to all!
Now I'm returning to my modelling after a long break. Here are my renders for stadium of Domitian. Actually the model has been created a year ago, but I could not render in in Kerkythea. Now ,after several investigations, I can present them:
Link: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=f6c504fb9ca7796b2cb21cddf6e42050&ct=mdrm
Also, I've recently made a new model. It doesn't belong no ancient culture but I think it also may be interesting. It's so-called Kondakov house, which stood in center of Sevastopol (my native sity) since 1895 till 1960th, when it was demolished, and a new typical building is situates now on this place:
Link: http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=625f3353073fd9eb4b3a928fefeeed52
Now I've started working with two interest objects - palace and baths of Diocletian. I suppose than this models will be a little bit more detailed than previous ones.
As for baths of Diocletian, i've seen a beautiful reconstructions made by Paulin (or Poulin, I don't know exactly), but those pictires had low quality. I would be wery appreciated, if you can share these reconstructions in good resolution, or tell where I cat get them from. Many thanks! -

Many thanks! Thanks Danik, the model of the stadium of Domitian is impressive. I have problem with kerkythea, too. I believe that my model of the roman theatre is too complex to be rendered
Regarding that building, where I live, a modernist (art-decó) house was demolished in the 70's. I understand your efforts, If I had time I would like to make the same thing you did.

I've made my first attempt to render some of my models as a video, so don't be severe
The Kerkythea render has been used, Photon map engine was at high mode. Currently I don't know how the lightning spots and other artefacts could be eliminated. Also, as it well seen, I connected several pieces of video to one, because 2nd and 3rd models are to complicated and I had to render them in parts. Transitions from part to part (for baths of Caracalla) are not smoothed in brightness aspect, i don't know yet how to perform it in a good manner.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itGrqNJAO7Q&feature=player_detailpage

Danik, definitely impressive renders.
(I have known your work from before of course).I know that it is not easy to do a good animation. What I have learnt however is that too long scenes when moving the camera are not too good. Nowadays everything is a bit sped up and if you watch a movie, scenes are cut/edited not to be longer than about 5-10 seconds each. I have just picked an exmple of the many excellent works by gabaedu (it was in the side bar as "related" to yours although I know them):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCdc7bkMtu0&feature=relatedWatch how most of the "scenes" are short (5-8 seconds), camera movement is simple (mostly just a transition between two cameras) and he puts the video together with a transition effect between these scenes.
Now this allows you to
- avoid clunky camera movements that come from not too easy and smooth camera path creation in SU
- as well as to leave some uninteresting parts out (I mean all the buildings are interesting but for instance when you come out of the Basicica Maxentiana, you are staring at nothing - not a good scene).
Another thing is materials. Even a simple render with not too tweaking of the materials is already stunning compared to SU's sketchy export (although that may have its place, too) but some reflections here and there, some real water materials in the batchs would tune this up even better.
I hope you do not take it wrong; I know I also (always) need these feedbacks. Like I have a single, one camera path in a more than 2 minute long video but while travelling over the river to and back, it is a bit uninteresting IMO.

Fantastic coin I found on Flickr:
A Magnificent and Exceptional Roman Orichalcum Sestertius of Trajan (98-117 C.E.), a Splendid View of the Circus Maximus as Restored by Trajan by Ancient Art, on FlickrYou can see it bigger clicking on it.
-
The earliest coin I've found was from Claudius. That was also really nice (and big - later coins tend to get smaller and smaller)
-
I thought it was a good idea to bring here coins and paintings or what else of Rome's ancient monuments. You can find a lot of them in that flickr's group. I remember seeing the Colosseum with medallions in a coin.
Edit: Another one:
A Rare, Magnificent, and Important Roman Orichalcum Sestertius of Caracalla (198-217 C.E.), a Remarkable View of the Circus Maximus, the Finest Known of the Type by Ancient Art, on Flickr -
I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but why is the Temple of Vespasian I made for my M.S. thesis transferred in to Google Sketchup? I'm fine with it, but I'm rather surprised. (see link - http://www.ancientsites.com/aw/Article/862364). He did improve it some, but the exact metrics are still there. The Roman Forum he built was, I see, my work, that he re-edited the buildings (and did a better job) from the framework I had. I used vrml and built it back in 2003 to 2006. I do like that he improved it and shared it with the public (I'm not a greedy intellectual hoarder), but I kind of feel like he took it to have everybody praise him as the complete genius of this. I would have liked to have had some credit early on.
-
are you sure it´s your work ?

Whether it's a matter of copyright or of accurate referencing, I don't think that Z-Akh69 or L.VII.C had bad intentions. It's usual to set value on accurate quoting/referencing in scientific circles, but not so much in a hobbyist context. However no 3d work (SketchUp files) has been posted here only 2d previews, so it's hard to judge.
I'm very confident that Z-Akh69 or L.VII.C would add references if you wish so (at the moment they haven't been around here, and this thread was rather quiet).
-
Hello, I use ancient reference for building my temple of vespasian. It's a very hard work...I have a new version for now but not already finish for the moment. Here some screen of my work -
I don't want to give my reference. It's a long job with many calculs and i'm working on this projet since august 2010...
-
After a long pause I've constructed the new shared model - the palace of Diocletian. The main improvements are new colums, pilasters and orders.

Welcome! It would be incredible to visit them in a game engine like Cryengine or Unreal... at least part of it (I understand if you want to make profit of your models and don't want to release them for free).

Why it would be incredible? Of course I have some commercial projects now and looking for more, but in a free time I still working with free models. For example, this years I plan to present a model of baths of Diocletian and integrate baths of Caracalla, baths of Diocletian and palace of Diocletian in a game engine like OpenSpace3D or Cryengine, and it will be in free use. as for website, it was created just for making the historical 3D reconstruction more popular.
