Why do you think this info is among the required profile fields upon registration now?
Look on the left and see it under your avatar!

I hadn't noticed it was a required field Gaieus, but I sure like that! A huge thanks to whoever thought of it and probably Coen for implementing it? At any rate, thats wonderful. Saves the hassle of the initial - what OS are you on?

Ehm... It was me.
And of course you didn't notice it - back when you registered, it wasn't required yet.And yeah, that was the initial idea but as a side effect, quite a lot of (potential) spammers get caught this way. I can already tell when I look at a registered account name that these fields won't be filled in.
