Designing Wine Cellars

I am a newbie to Sketchup. I have a custom woodworking shop, and we specialize in designing and building wine cellars among other things. I was wondering if anyone has designed any wine cellars in SketchUp and could give me some advice, or point me to some models that may exist. I am really interested in using this program as much as possible. Still a lot to learn!!

Hi Ron and welcome!
I had a look at your website (nice one, indeed) since I come from a wine region myself.
You say you are (or rather have been so far) mainly a woodworker (I see you have already "signed up" for that forum). Beside making custom wine cellar "furniture", what else would be special for wine cellars (I guess in this case it's not you who builds the cellar itself)? Or actually what makes woodworking for wine cellars special?

Make sure that you use components for things that repeat a lot!

My advice is start on something simple, post it up and ask for comments. We would be glad to steer you down the right vine.

Wow! Thanks for the quick response from all of you. I spent half the day yesterday looking at several tutorials. It looks like quite a learning curve, but I think I will get it.
We do some quite large wine cellars, and they can have literally thousands of parts, so you can imagine my need to figure out the most expedient way of drawing this. My other software does very well in rendering an approximation in 3D, but it is not completely accurate as to the dimensioning. Sketchup looks like it will solve that problem.
Mateo, I loved your renderings. I did a bar and wine display very similar to your lower one in the Atlanta Airport last year. Very nice job. If I can ever get close to that kind of professional level drawing I will be very happy.
I hope I don't wear you folks out with too many questions (but I just might!!)
One thing I have already noticed on some sample drawings I tried yesterday is this - I drew 2 vertical boards and placed a horizontal 3/4 x 3/4 piece on them (as you would on a wine rack). When I moved/copied the piece, it was hollow. When I copied that piece to the other side of the rack,one entire side of the horozontal piece was missing. Any suggestions?

Wine cellars can have hundreds if not thousands of parts. And yes, sometimes I also build the room or building that houses the cellar. There are a number of different design elements that are typical in a cellar, for example, both large and small diamond bins, high reveal displays (where the bottles are layed on an angle so you can read the labels, and of course single bottle racking. The interior corners of a racking system can be curved, there can be ladders involved if it is very high. There is almost no end to all the design features that can be involved in a good cellar. I am soon going to be designing a large (10,000 bottle) cellar that will be housed in a round building. There will be an exterior corridor around the perimiter of this building that will feel like a circular hallway with racking on both sides of it from floor to ceiling. Lots of curves, very tall, with ladders, and a mix of racking/storage design!! Help!!As you can see, I need to master this software, as my designs can be complicated. I'll stick to the woodworking forum so as to not cause any problems. But if you have any suggestions (or answers, as I will will no doubt have tons of questions) please check over there. Any input you have will be greatly appreciated.
