A vacuum tool ?

I find myself quite often drawing something that is destined to become a component in a model, then either painstakingly selecting all the lines one by one, grouping and finishing off the above mentioned component, or doing the old marquee selection trick (only to find I have also selected 1/2 the geometry hidden behind what I am working on and), well you know.
So to get to the point, is there some way to take advantage of the strength of the eraser tool, the part where you hold down the mouse key and scruff around like a real eraser picking up lines, only instead of erasing those lines, save them as a group that you can enter and work on? It could be like a vacuum tool. Give Sang something to do

There are several rubies out there that erase lonely lines and orphaned edges. I use those alot. Check out the ruby depot or smustard. I am a bit gun-shy about posting names and files on the forum cuz I got reamed for doing it once. but they are out there.

Dale, that would, indeed, be awesome.
I really hate the selection tools in SU; they pale in comparison to Cheetah/Z-Brush/Silo, etc.
Being able to add to selections without having to hold down shift would be great.
There is a script for remembering selections, which is really nice, but it would be great if we had other ways to add to selections other than point and click would be very useful, IMO.
In Cheetah, you can hold the left mouse button and drag over things to select them, release the button, click again and continue to add to the selection until you click off the object entirely.
Growing and shrinking selections would be very useful to me too.

You can then right-click and group the selected lines...

Just follow Solo's advice and keep another SketchUp instance open just for creating such components, so you keep your main working space clean.

what would really be nice would be able to use the rectangle tool for selecting only visible lines or faces, instead of selecting the geometry behind, and even better would be to have the ability to draw the selection, rather than be limited to a rectangle

the eraser tool trick is cool. to be able to select only visible geometry would also be good.
another way is to draw the first face of your new object. then dbl click select it and make it a group or component. then open the group and carry on building inside it without fear of affecting other geometry
