Exporting to STL for 3D printing direct from SketchUp..???
-
Hi there
Has anybody any experience of using Didiers export to STL ruby, for the file format for 3D printing. Does it work on complex models with terrain etc.. Are there limits to it..?, i'd need to export large masterplan massing models for 3D printing. Have people had success with exporting from sketch up to 3D printers in general.. What's the best practice and process for this...?
I get the impression it could be a problem exporting from SU because of the mesh's as oppossed to nurbs thing SU has. A few people mentioned that Rhino would be my best bet.Any info would be much appreciated..
Many Thanks

I sent a little test model down to the plotter. Worked fine. I'm not sure about all the mesh stuff, but the video at thier site explaines it pretty well I though. It just checking for leaks and setting all the different tolerences and such. I would think that if the STL compiliation works fine in SU, it should fine in the printer. I compiled some more complex models in US and they looked good after a few attemps. The first ones involed the program filling gaps too agressively. Turned it down (or up?) and than all my openenings were fine. But I havn't had too much experience other than that.
