I Have about hmmm, over 1000 Drawings that are 10k pixels by 8k,some ships have up to 12 drawings but others can be simple, there's very little guess work involved and the beauty comes off the drawings really,Having some background knowledge does of course help in other areas were things are hidden.
HMS Leopard being a perfect example,The Stern Castle (Back Raised area) has a galley (a walkable opening) and is not flat at all,but looking at all the views on the prints there is no indication of this,I only picked it up on a Artist painting Of Leopard from that time period,so who knows what else ive misinterpreted.
Ive modeled many other ships that did not reach completion stage due to serious difficulty reading the drawings.

Awesome stuff... would it be possible to get some close ups so we can truly appreciate you work?

Note : these are all in game shots at about 50fps,this current engine does not support self cast shadows, but the new one soon to be release has shadows, does wonders for tall ships ๐Ÿ˜„

Wow! Great work Marius. You clearly enjoy building the models. I hope you also enjoy sailing them in your simulator! I can imagine that is fun. Is there any way you can make a little movie to show what it is like?

I've sent a link to this thread to a friend on the Google SketchUp team. I'm sure they'll enjoy seeing how you are using SketchUp.

                Regards, Ross

Finnaly learned how to make these, took 7 hours to render the 500 +- frames at 15fps

This file is 4mb at very reduced quality, the original is 450mb Avi,looks good but yea...

Cool animation! Did you use VirtualDub?
Nice to see that not only building can be modeled in SketchUp.
I like your ships, great models!

Indeed so,a Tutorial on KT animations shaved hours off "figure it out" time ๐Ÿ˜„

Thx glad you like them, now to get them to move and have material sails...maybe some ppl walking around and doing stuff.

                        Hi Marius,

Great video (ehm... for a great render of course a great model is the first step so that should've gone first).

I can imagine the difference in quality due to this compression so just can pity that we cannot see.

As for open sails, I'd suggest Soap Skin and Bubble if you haven't know it yet. Some great effets can be achieved like in the images here.

Thx Gaieus,Ive always used SSB for making my sails,I make them as low poly as possible, the simulator has fps problems if they are to high when switching from port tack models to starboard. But what i need is to be able to add wind and a material to have a moving animation, similar to what can be easily done in Maya.

And of course real water would be nice and a moving ship, but I think I might need a FX department for that ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ah,yeah,as now I read the whole thread back again, you already mentioned SSB.

How big is your SU model (polygon wise as well as file size) now? I would always wonder to which point it is still easily navigable and manageable in SU.

Also, how do you actually start a model like this? I see that you have drawings but then you draw polylines from section to section or what? I guess the basis is the hull always.

                            Gai...

The SU file is about 14mb and poly count 57,000 ,not hard to navigate in SU at all ๐Ÿ˜„

IS it just me or are you fixated on vessels with long bowsprits? I am far from an expert but the vessels you have rendered seem to have some extreme sail plans.

Rodger I am not sure what you mean by "extreme" sail plan?many sails?Sail area? Sail to hull ratio?
Ither or I do love these ships and Hope to get Employment on one some day,but for now modeling them is great!

Ive started HMS Bellona 74 two days ago and thought you guys would like to see how it is done in a WIP thread, maybe Ill just hack this one ๐Ÿ˜„

                                          http://www.dats.co.za/axe/WIP/Bellona/4.jpg

There are still many flaws and tweaking takes loads of time, and this being the biggest ship ive done to date,it should take even longer.
