There's a more direct way than that, Ray. Vivaty Studio. http://www.vivaty.com/downloads/studio/
It's free, it imports kmz and kml directly (without having to rename to zip and extract the dae)...and it will export to almost every common 3d format known to man.
(When starting Vivaty, you first need to close the rotating splash screen.) -
How strange, that top one doesn't work with me. When inside the .kmz all I see is a klm file.
