Graphic Card...Again
-
That is what I was looking for someone to say. My associates is awesome with Sketchup. That confirms my findings and so I'm getting one, I'm just not sure I can find one. What about the 9800 GTX would that be equivalent or not? Thanks Pete!
Edit: Hey Pete, I found an 8800 Utra 768mb, is that the same or equivalent?
-
Your absolutely right Stu, it's a very frustrating thing. I feel like I'am gambling regarding my choice for a graphics card. I guess there is only so much research one can do and then you just have to take the plunge.
By dog, you mean good, right? I'm not sure what the difference is.
-
Sorry Mate.....dog = baaaaad!!

Strange, I might say just the opposite.
My 8800GT performs well. The speed drop I experience while editing SU files ,in my case, is caused by the way SU is coded, but I am sure it is not directly related to the 8800GT card. That speed lag is a thing every one experiences using SU for complexer models, regardless of the Graphical card used.
-
I have been able to find a GeForce 8800 Ultra 768MB. I think this will be the one unless someone pipes up and says for not to.
-
You might want to look at this although I have not used it myself

Now thats interesting Brian. Hummmmm! Having a hard time here.
-
Pete, are you out there, calling Pete. Do you know if the machine running the 8800 gtx's in SLI are significantly faster than the single?
-
Its quite bulky, but this roundup gives a good overview of all the 8800 cards.

Kwistie, Im not talking about a speed drop...I get black screens, white screens, missing tool bars, SU not responding messages. A Piranesi demo Im trialing is just about unusable...but I get great results on a laptop running a 8600GS card. Even Google acknowledges that this [8800GT] card can cause problems. i wish it was just a machine configuration issue but actually Tavi is running an almost identical machine and getting great results.
All very frustrating.
Sorry Spence...its a bit of a lottery as you said, but Im looking seriously at up grading to the 8800GTX...[if somsbody can tell me what the 'X' factor is ]Actually, looking at this [with my uneducated eye] http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce_8800.html there doesnt seem to be such a huge difference between the the GT and GTX ?

I would guess its down to what you want to pay
The range of 8800 cards are expensive
The range of quadro cards have CAD support, but even more expensive!
The latest 9600GT would appear to be very quick and half the price, I dont know if anybody out there is using one with SU?
You may also need to check your motherboards compatability

There's also the 9800gtx which has come down in price if you shop around

Ok, what do you think about an EVGA e-GeForce 8800Ultra 768MB Video Card? I found one for $450, does that sound right?
-
That sounds about right, although if your looking to spend that sort of money its probably worth having a look at the 9800 cards. Youll get a more powerful card for roughly the same money. Im not sure how well they work with SU though.
-
Remus,
That is what I've thought about, so here goes my gamble. I'll be thinking and let you know what happens everyone. Thanks for the great advise.
-
Good luck!

Thanks remus!

Well, it sure has been interesting upgrading my graphic card. Not only did I upgrade my graphic card I bought an entirely new computer. I ended up getting a GeForce 8800 Ultra and could not get it to work in my existing machine, tried everything. So I decided to buy all new parts, I purchased these parts for a machine and the 8800 Ultra. So far this baby rips. I'm running XP Pro. Sketchup is fantastic on this machine I would not change a thing. Thanks for the help and suggestions everyone.

Thats a pretty sweet machine youve got there spence, the stuff of (geeky) dreams.
