      Dear All,

For the mechanical engineers, a simple assembly.

Click on 'Display Section Cut' to see section through leveller. Some work needs to be done on the thread textures, but it is quite a good representation of the assembly.

      Regards,
      Bob

          Dear Eric,

Thanks for that. I know that the offering is unusual in that it does not address architecture, furniture or landscaping, but I wanted to show how Sketchup might be used in the mechanical design process.

          Kind regards,
          Bob

Very nice bit of work. I love mechanical drawings... 👍

Real life is just another website, albeit a rather boring one.

                Dear Malaise and Teezer,

Thank you for your kind comments. The thread textures (which could be improved) make a difference to the 'readability' of the 3D model, but what Sketchup could do with is a good (low poly) library of mechanical parts, like nuts and bolts. I'm surprised that no one has written a ruby to generate metric fasteners. For example, one could imagine clicking on the icon of a bolt and then a window opening. The window would ask:

                Size (M1 to M40 say)
                Type (Hexhead, CapHead, Countersunk etc)
                Overall length
                Thread length

Data are readily available. For example:
                http://www.engineersedge.com/iso_hex_head_screw.htm

The ruby would then generate the fastener. Ideally, the ruby would also apply the thread texture too.

                Kind regards,
                Bob
