Soft Shadows ?

Hi Guys,
I have had an idea floating around in the back of my mind for
a while that I would like to air here.I wonder if it is possible to make a Ruby that could create a
Soft Shadow effect for objects?Thinking (as a layman) about how this could be done, I imagine
if here was some way of taking a standard shadow and make a
few copies of it. Lets say 5 copies! but each copy would be
scaled smaller.The smallest would be the darkest and the largest (full shadow)
the lightest. Then they would then be overlaid.Just thinking out aloud here.

the only problem is that you cannot take the standard shadow
a workaround is to do it yourself, as Adam did it in LightUp. (and looks better than standard one) -
