Ok, I will start by saying that I know almost nothing about laptops.

Now that I have a nice new slammin' machine at home our old computer is getting jealous πŸ˜• Seriously, it is having new problems every day. I am going to have it cleaned next week and maybe that will help but that is neither here nor there.

On to the laptop... I thought I might get my wife a laptop that she can use for her graduate degree she is starting now. She will be writing papers, collecting information and uploading/downloading assignments. She would not need great graphics or processing speed, just an internet connection and Microsoft Office (sorry Mike, no Air Book πŸ˜„ ). I am thinking laptop because she spends a good deal of time away from the home computer that could be used for classwork (or even her job if need be).

      Any suggestions?

For what she needs I would suggest a mid range laptop, dual core, maybe a Toshiba (I have had success wth this brand).A 17" with 2.0 ghz, 250GB hd, 2gb ram and 256mb onboard nvidia GPU goes for about $700 to $800. It has built in network adapters etc, comes with Vista ultimate.
If I am not mistaken Walmart has them on special at moment.

If you see a toilet in your dreams do not use it.

How about this? i reckon the one on the left looks like a pretty good deal, and you can upgrade lots of bits on it if you need beefier processor/battery/paint job.

I dont think you can go too wrong with Toshiba in my experience. My wifes/kids 17" has been fantastic after 2 years and still works perfectly.

I personally like Sony laptops, I find they have much nicer keyboards.

I would go down to your nearest comp store and see what you like the feel of (computers that is πŸ˜„)

Thanks all. I have not even discussed it with my wife yet, she has been really busy. I may take her to the store this weekend when my daughter is over at her friends house.

I am glad to hear good reviews about the Toshiba. It further strengthens my belief that a former co worker's Toshiba problems were user error πŸ˜„
